Gauge

22 hdc over 16 rows=4” square. Be sure to check your gauge to ensure fit. Adjust hook or yarn size if necessary.

Hdc in the next 9 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 12 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 18 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 12 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 9 sts. Row 10. Hdc in the next 14 sts, hdc through the front loop in the next ch, hdc in the next 30 sts, hdc through the front loop in the next ch, hdc in the next 14 sts. Ch 2, turn. (60 hdc)

Row 11-24. Hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (60 hdc)

Row 25. Hdc in each st across until the last st, 3 hdc in the last st. (62 sts)

Rotate and loosely work a hdc in the end of every row up the front opening of the cardigan until the last st, work 3 hdc in the last st. (27 hdc)

Rotate and work across the ch row at the neckline as follows: hdc in the next 4 ch, *hdc2tog, hdc in the next ch. Repeat from * 3 more times (4 times total), hdc in the next 14 ch, ^hdc in the next ch, hdc2tog. Repeat from ^ 3 more times (4 times total), hdc in the next 4 ch, work 3 hdc in the last ch. (41 hdc)

Rotate and work down the opposite front opening of the cardigan working loosely in the end of each row as follows: *ch 1, skip the next st, hdc in the next 4 sts. Repeat from * 4 more times (5 times total) across, working 2 hdc in the last st. (5 ch space, 21 hdc)

Row 26. Working around the entire outside edge that you just worked, *fpdc in the next st, bpdc in the next st. Repeat from * across the bottom edge, the right side opening and the neckline. Once you reach the edge with the ch spaces for button holes work as follows: ^hdc in the ch space, bpdc, fpdc, bpdc, fpdc, hdc in the ch space, fpdc, bpdc, fpdc, bpdc. Repeat from ^ across (ending with hdc in ch sp, bpdc, fpdc, bpdc, fpdc), bpdc in the last st. (156 sts)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Sleeves

Create a slip knot and pick up the chain st under the left arm. 

Row 1. Sl st in the ch st to join, hdc in the same st, hdc in the next 23 sts. Ch 2, turn. (24 hdc)

Row 2-11. Hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (24 hdc)

Row 12. Hdc through the back loop in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (24 hdc)

Row 13. *fpdc in the next st, bpdc in the st. Repeat from * across. Bpdc in the turning ch. Ch 2, turn. (24 sts)

Row 14. *bpdc in the next post st, fpdc in the next post st. Repeat from * across. Bpdc in the turning ch.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Turn the sleeve inside out and whipstitch the seam together. Weave in ends. 

Repeat instructions for the right sleeve. 

Fold up the edge of the sleeves for the cuffs.

Buttons

Sew 5 buttons on the opening front edge opposite to the buttonholes.  I used the same yarn I used for the sweater threaded through a sewing needle.
