Summer Bag Crochet Pattern for American Girl and 18″ Dolls

Crochet a “straw” like summer bag for your doll. Add tassels or poms to dress it up if desired. Skill level: Easy, knowledge of basic crochet stitches and working in the round.

  • #4 Worsted Yarn
  • E 3.5 mm hook
  • Row counter
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery floss (peach, pink & yellow) (optional)

Bag Face (make 2)

With tan, ch 3. Sl st to the first ch to create a ring. The face of the bag is worked in continuous rounds. 

Row 1. Work 6 sc into the center of the ring. (6 sc)

Row 2. 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Row 3. *sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (18 sc)

Row 4. *sc 2, inc. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Row 5. *sc 2, inc. Repeat from * around. (32 sc)

Row 6. *sc 3, inc. Repeat from * around. (40 sc)

Row 7. *sc 4, inc. Repeat from * around. (48 sc)

Row 8. *sc 5, inc. Repeat from * around. (56 sc)

Row 9. *sc 6, inc. Repeat from * around. (64 sc)

Row 10. *sc 7, inc. Repeat from * around. (72 sc)

Sl st to the next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Set aside.  

Bag Base

With tan, ch 51.

Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 2-5. Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 6. Sc in each st across. (50 sc)

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Set aside.

Straps (make 2)

With light brown, ch 55.

Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (54 sc)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Finishing

Line the base of the bag up with one of the faces of the bag starting at the tail. Using the tail of the round piece, whipstitch to the base across the entire long edge through the back loops of both pieces. Weave in ends.

Line up the other face of the bag with the base and using the tail, whipstitch the opposite edge of the base to the bag face through the back loop of the round piece and the chain row of the base.

Cut 4 strands of tan about 7 inches long and sew the straps to the front of the bag using a cross stitch pattern. Weave in ends. If desired, using the embroidery floss, create 3 small tassels and sew to the bag.
