What you will need:

  • Worsted Yarn
  • E (3.5mm) hook
  • 6 mm star confetti
  • Dowel rod (0.125” diameter)
  • Row counter
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Shears for cutting the dowel (I used garden shears)
  • Hot glue

Yarn:

  • Red-Knit Picks Mighty Stitch 1 skein in Serrano
  • White-Knit Picks Mighty Stitch 1 skein in White
  • Blue-Knit Picks Mighty Stitch 1 skein in Celestial

Gauge: 22 sc over 24 rows=4” square

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • Sc-single crochet
  • St-stitch
  • Ch-chain

Special Instructions

  • Keep yarn tails pulled to the wrong side of the work when changing colors mid row.
  • Carry the unused yarn up the edge of your work.
  • Color changes: When directed to change colors, insert your hook in the next stitch and pull up a loop with the original color first, yarn over with the new color and pull through the loops. Ex: from white, change to blue, insert your hook into the next st, pull up a loop with white, yarn over with blue, pull through both loops with blue. The first stitch will appear white. This color change method keeps the entire stitch the same color so a stitch isn’t half one color and half the other.

Finishing

Using the 6 mm star confetti, glue 50 stars to the blue section of the flag. You could also embroider the stars if you prefer. With the garden shears I cut the dowel rod 10” long and glued it to the back of the flag along the edge with the blue section.
